Wolves lose late lead, drop second straight

Busted play results in a tough 15-13 defeat

A botched snap on an extra point normally results in good things for a defense.

Not for the Coupeville football team on Friday, however, as a mishandled snap turned into the go-ahead score for Granite Falls and a 15-13 road loss for the Wolves.

After Coupeville allowed Tiger quarterback Billy Villegas to scamper in from two yards out, the game was tied 13-13 late in the fourth quarter.

All Granite Falls had to do was kick the extra point to take a lead, but a bad snap left holder Tyler Anderson scrambling with the ball. Anderson heaved the ball in the corner to John Pennington who was wide open for a two-point conversion.

“The kid just did a nice job of keeping his cool and finding the open man,” CHS coach Ron Bagby said.

Coupeville took the game’s initial lead during the first quarter on a 53-yard run from junior fullback Casey Larson.

Larson added one more score for the Wolves later in the first half on a 13-yard run.

“He’s doing a really nice job running the ball right now,” Bagby said. “Like I said before, we’ve got to try and find more ways to get him the ball.”

The ensuing extra point after Larson’s second touchdown from Alex Evans was blocked, leaving the Wolves with a 13-0 advantage.

The Tigers crept closer just before the half, scoring on a two-yard run from Jullian Gamache and pulling within 13-7.

Coupeville maintained possession of the ball for much of the game, while running back J.J. Marti rushed for over 120 yards. The Wolves couldn’t execute, however, stalling on several trips into Tiger territory.

“We beat them all over the field and just couldn’t finish the deal,” Bagby said.

Quarterback Mike Bagby had his struggles against the Tiger secondary, completing 7-for-20 of his passes (35 percent).

Coupeville is now 0-2 in non-league competition. They have one more non-league contest at 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 17 at Curtis High School against Tacoma Baptist.

“We’re certainly getting there,” Bagby said. “We just need to find a way to believe that we can win a game.”

The Wolves start up Northwest A/B competition the following week, Sept. 23 on the road against Concrete.
