Some losses are “good” losses. Such was the case in Coupeville High School’s 5-3 softball setback to visiting Archbishop Murphy Tuesday, April 29.

After a lackluster double header loss (14-4, 9-0) at Sultan Monday, the Wolves bounced back with a solid performance against the second-place Wildcats (8-3, 9-4).

“Two different Coupeville teams showed up this week,” co-coach David King said. “The one that went to Sultan and the one that played at home against ATM.”

“(The Archbishop Murphy) game was a 180 reversal of how we played the day before,” King said. “We came ready to play, we played better defense and we came ready to hit.”

Coupeville pounded out 11 hits against Murphy, getting two each from Madi Roberts, Bree Messner and Emily Coulter. Maddi Strasburg ripped a triple; and McKayla Bailey, Hailey Hammer, Tiffany Briscoe and Emily Licence added singles.

Coupeville scored first when Roberts led off with a single, Bailey singled and Messner singled in a run. After a double play, Strasburg tripled in another run.

Murphy tied it in the third, set up by a dropped pop up in the infield. Two doubles followed to plate the two runs.

A triple and error gave the Wildcats the lead, 3-2, in the fourth.

Coupeville came back with a run in its half. Roberts doubled after Coulter and Licence singled.

Archbishop Murphy won it with two runs in the seventh on a single, double and safety squeeze.

The first Sultan game was a continuation of a game that was halted earlier in the season because of rain. The Turks led 4-3 in the second inning when it was suspended.

Coupeville scored three times in the first. Roberts singled and scored on Messner’s double. An error and single by Hammer scored Messner, and a run-scoring base hit by Strasburg finished the scoring.

Coupeville would get only two more hits in the game (an RBI single by Bailey and a single by Hammer).

The Turks piled up 13 hits (and received six Coupeville errors) and scored in every inning.

In game two, Sultan pitcher Shelby Jeffries pitched a two-hitter and struck out 16.

Roberts led off the game with a single and Strasburg singled in the second inning.

The Turks thumped 12 hits, including five doubles and a triple.

“Defensively this was probably our low point of the season,” King said. The Wolves dropped two pop ups in the infield and two outfield flies.

King noted, however, third baseman Licence made an outstanding play on a slow roller.

The Wolves (3-11, 4-11) get another shot at Sultan (7-3, 8-3) at 4 p.m. Monday, May 5, in their final home game before closing out the regular season with three on the road.

“We will be prepared and ready to show Sultan that we are a better team than what we showed (Monday),” King said.
