King’s High School scored a pair of first half goals in Thursday’s Cascade Conference soccer game against Coupeville but rather than throwing in the towel, the Wolves put together 40 minutes of great play in the second half.

Goal keeper Joshua Adams turned away five shots, including one from point-blank range at the 43-minute mark by Trevor Bartels, and a header in the net by Coupeville’s Geoff Wacker at the 59-minute mark made the score 2-1.

However, Michael Kenyon scored an insurance goal for the Knights off a corner kick by Gunnar Ildhuso and King’s managed to pull out a 3-1 victory.

Coupeville coach Paul Mendes said he was very pleased with the way the Wolves played in the second half.

“I was proud of you,” he said. “You guys didn’t pack it in and came back strong in the second half. You played some quality stuff out there today.”

Ryan McCormick opened the scoring for King’s at the 7-minute mark of the first half.

After Adams made a diving save on a shot by Ryan Gamache to tip the ball away, McCormick booted the rebound into the lower right corner of the net for a 1-0 Knights lead.

McCormick made the score 2-0 on an unassisted goal at the 26-minute mark and the first half ended with King’s holding a 2-0 advantage.

In the second half, Coupeville’s defense stepped up.

“We played solid defense in the second half and we got a spark off that goal that we didn’t have in the first half,” Mendes said. “It charged us up and we did some good things out there. This game is definitely going to help us get ready for the playoffs.”

Taylor Anthony set things up for the Wolves with a direct kick that hit a couple of players in front of the Knights’ net before Wacker beat goal keeper Anthony Ulskey with a header to cut the lead in half.

Coupeville (2-12 league, 4-14 overall) had chances to tie the score in the second half, but several shots on goal sailed just high or were tipped away by Ulskey.

Adams said the Wolves are going to do well in the district playoffs.

“We’re going to state,” he said.
