The visiting Coupeville High School softball team put up a good fight before falling 7-4 to top-ranked Lynden Christian Tuesday, April 12.

The win lifted Lynden Christian’s record to 7-0; the Lyncs, however, lost 6-5 to 2A Lynden Wednesday.

Coupeville (1-0, 6-2), which had a five-game win streak snapped, will look to bounce back when it returns to Olympic League play at 4:15 p.m. Thursday, April 14, in Chimacum (0-0, 4-3).

Lynden Christian and Coupeville were tied 1-1 going into the bottom of the fourth inning, then the Lyncs scores six runs with the help of “a few young team errors,” according to Coupeville coach Kevin McGranahan.

The Wolves fought back, scoring three runs in the seventh inning, but the rally died with the bases loaded when the Lyncs came up with an outstanding defensive play for the third out.

Katrina McGranahan paced the Coupeville offense with two triples, a double and an RBI. Veronica Crownover added three singles and two RBI, and Sarah Wright singled in a run.

Pitcher McGranahan and catcher Wright were also among the defensive leaders. McGranahan fanned three and Wright gunned down a would-be stealer.

“It was a very hard fought game and these ladies gave it everything they had,” coach McGranahan said. “We played them a lot tougher than last year (a 21-6 loss). I would put these ladies up against anybody — with their heart and determination they are never out of any game. I believe in good losses and bad losses and this was a very good loss. They all hurt, but this was a good measuring-stick game against an undefeated team that has been mercy-ruling their competition.”
