After mounting a frantic comeback to send the game into overtime, the Coupeville football team ran out of miracles and lost in overtime 34-28 to Sultan at Mickey Clark Field Friday.
Down 14-0 in the second quarter, the Wolves made their first move when linebacker Chad Brookhouse picked off a pass and returned the interception 40 yards to set up a six-yard TD pass from Jason Bagby to Dalton Engle.
After Sultan scored again in the third quarter, Coupeville responded with another touchdown by Engle, a 30-yard run to cut the lead to 21-14.
Again the Turks went up by 14 by scoring near the end of the third quarter.
Coupeville was held in check until it received possession with 4:17 left in the game. Just over a minute later, Bagby struck again, this time hitting Ian Smith with a 50-yarder.
The Wolves recovered the ensuring on-side kick, and a few plays later scored on another Bagby pass, this time a 20-yard screen play to Justin Adams with just over a minute left in the game.
Coupeville wasn’t through. It forced Sultan to a three-and-out and got the ball back for one more chance to win it in regulation.
The Wolves drove to near the Sultan 25. From there Adams attempted a 40-yard field goal with five seconds left. The boot was wide and the game went to overtime.
Coupeville had the first possession, lost yards on the first two plays, picked up minimal yards on third down, then Bagby threw to the end zone of fourth down. The pass was broken up and Sultan took over.
It took the Turks just three plays to get to the 2. Trying to catch magic one more time, a determined Coupeville defense held for three downs before Sultan punched it in from the 1 on fourth down for the win.
Bagby finished the game 9-22 for 151 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Smith caught five passes for 103 yards.
Adams racked up 108 yards rushing on 16 carries.
Brookhouse tallied 12 tackles to go along with his interception. David Donley recorded three sacks.
The Wolves (1-3, 3-3) host Lakewood (0-4, 2-4) in Friday’s homecoming game at 7 p.m. The Cougars a led by quarterback Justin Lane who had thrown for over 1,300 yards this fall.
