Taking down its long-time rivals, the Coupeville High School tennis team slipped by visiting Friday Harbor 3-2 Tuesday, March 18.

The Wolves won both singles matches. Allie Hanigan captured first singles 6-3, 7-6(7-4), while Jacki Ginnings came back to take second singles 6-7(3-7), 6-2, 6-3.

McKenzie Bailey and Wynter Thorne were 6-3, 6-2 winners in second doubles.

Coupeville coach Ken Stange called Ginnings’ win, a two-hour match, the most exciting contest of the day.

“In the second and third sets, Jacki employed her topspin game, which she had been practicing for the past two weeks,” Stange said. “The result was a big turnabout. Jacki’s win clinched the team’s win.”

Stange liked how Bailey and Thorne rebounded from a tough loss the day before in the season-opening match with Port Townsend. They were “very dominant” and “Wynter played under control and McKenzie unleashed her aggression,” Stange said.

Samantha Martin and Sydney Aparicio dropped first doubles 6-0, 4-6, 6-2; and Valen Trujillo and Ana Luvera fell in third doubles 6-4, 6-2.

The teams also played three JV doubles matches, all won by Coupeville. Ivy Luvera and Micky LeVine won 8-5, and Maureen Rice and Haleigh Deasy played two matches, winning 8-0 and 6-0.

“All in all, it was a fun match,” Stange said. “Our girls continue to improve and we pulled out another win.”

The Wolves (2-0) head to Blaine (0-1) at 3:30 Friday, March 21.
