The eight seniors on the Coupeville High School soccer team finally earned bragging rights over South Whidbey, defeating the visiting Falcons 2-1 Tuesday, Sept. 9, in the season opener.
The win broke the Wolves’ four-year losing streak to South Whidbey.
One of Coupeville’s youngest players, freshman Mia Littlejohn, scored both goals to do her part in helping the seniors snap the losing string.
In the first half, Littlejohn scored the match’s opening goal, and South Whidbey countered with a goal just before the break.
Early in the second half, Littlejohn struck again, and, from there, it was up to the Coupeville defense to hang on.
South Whidbey “really put the pressure on” near the end of the match, according to CHS coach Troy Cowan.
“Without a doubt, though, the defensive play of the match was when one of the South Whidbey players launched a rocket from the top of the 18 towards the goal and our staunchest defender (Jennifer Spark) took the blow off her back and chased the ball down to clear it,” Cowan said.
“All the girls played well, especially our seniors,” Cowan said.
Senior captain Erin Rosenkranz “played the best match I have ever seen her play,” Cowan said. “She was, simply put, a warrior.”
“Julia Myers played the match of her career,” Cowan said in regard to the Wolves’ keeper. “After giving up an early goal, she clamped down hard and refused to be scored upon.”
“Solid performances by the Luvera twins, Jackie Ginnings, Marisa Etzell, Christine Fields and Mickey LeVine all contributed to the final outcome,” he said.
Littlejohn wasn’t the only freshman to help in the win. Sage Renninger “played outstanding as well, wearing the right and left side of the pitch out with South Whidbey defenders in tow,” Cowan said.
The Wolves journey to Sequim for a noon nonleague match Saturday, Sept. 13.
