Most didn’t see this coming.

The Coupeville High School football team lost 49-6 to Klahowya Friday, Oct. 3, in Silverdale.

While the Eagles’ win was a mild surprise, the real shocker was the score.

Coupeville entered the game with a 3-1 record, 2-0 in Olympic League play. Klahowya was 1-3 and 1-1. The Wolves were fresh off a 29-21 win over Port Townsend, a team that defeated Klahowya 22-9.

The Eagles buried Coupeville with a 35-point second quarter and scrambled the Olympic League 1A division standings.

Now Coupeville, Klahowya and Port Townsend are tied for first in the four-team division with 2-1 records; Chimacum is 0-3.

The Coupeville-Klahowya game completed the first round of league games, now the four teams meet again to finish the schedule. The top two teams advance to the playoffs.

Coupeville (3-2) begins round two at Port Townsend at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10.

Coupeville and Klahowya battled through a scoreless first quarter. In the period the Wolves sputtered, moving within the Eagle 10 three times but failed to score.

“After that,” coach Tony Maggio said, “we were done.”

Klahowya then exploded in the second quarter for five touchdowns.

Three of the scores came on Konner Langholff runs; Austin Sargent bolted for an 89-yard score; and a 34-yard pass completed the onslaught.

Coupeville’s lone score was the game’s last. Backup quarterback C.J. Smith threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Griggs in the fourth quarter.

Smith, in relief of starter Joel Walstad, completed seven of 10 passes for 87 yards.

Walstad, fighting through an injury from the previous game, completed four passes for 32 yards before having to leave. He will most likely miss this Friday’s game, Maggio said.

Josh Bayne (47 yards) and Griggs (28 yards) each caught three passes.

Coupeville’s strong rushing attack, which came into the game averaging 283 yards per contest, was held to 150.

Bayne had 91 yards on 14 carries; Wiley Hesselgrave was next with 36 yards on four carries.

Meanwhile, the Eagles rolled on the ground. Langholff rushed for 193 yards on 18 runs; it took Sargent just five carries to collect 139 yards.

Hesselgrave led the Wolves on defense with four tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery.

Bayne added six tackles, and Hunter Smith and Dominic Dausey each recovered fumbles.

“We are just not healthy,” Maggio said. Walstad played part of the game, lineman Aaron Wright played a couple of plays but missed most of the game with a shin injury and fullback/linebacker Lathom Kelley sat with a shin problem.

“Klahowya played their best game and we played out worst; not much else I can say,” Maggio said.
