No one was injured in a blaze that consumed a South Whidbey mobile home on Wednesday.
South Whidbey Fire/EMS responded to the report of a fire around 12:58 p.m. on June 19 at a Freeland Avenue residence, according to Deputy Chief Terry Ney. The home’s sole occupant escaped when she noticed the flames.
Firefighters contained the blaze within 10 minutes but remained on scene for about three hours, removing contents of the home in order to access the interior wall where the fire originated. The blaze appeared to have started in the kitchen/dining area of the home and burned through the floor, which firefighters had to cover with pieces of plywood, Ney said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation but may have been electrical in nature. Ney said Puget Sound Energy responded to pull the meter and shut off power due to damaged wiring in the trailer.
The mobile home is a total loss and no longer livable. South Whidbey Fire/EMS connected the resident with Red Cross to receive aid.
With warm summer temperatures ramping up and moisture levels dropping off, Whidbey residents should be mindful of the danger of starting wildfires.
On Thursday, the Island County Sheriff’s Office issued a type 1 burn ban, which will go into effect June 30. As part of the ban, outdoor burning of natural debris is prohibited. Recreational fires are permitted in an approved fire pit. The use of barbeque grills using propane or briquettes, or self-contained camp stoves are also allowed.
