A section of State Highway 20 near Coupeville will be reduced to one lane next week as crews move power poles, according to a state Department of Transportation spokesman.

Puget Sound Energy is relocating the poles to make way for a $5.8-million, safety-related road project that should begin in early June. The project would close two intersections on the highway and add left-turn lanes at Morris Road and the Island County transfer stations.

The section of the highway is known for rear-end accidents.

The section of the highway that will be affected next week is from Quail Trail to Morris Road. The work begins Monday and may extend further in the week, depending on how the work progresses, the spokesman said.

The DOT reported in November that about 100 trees in the area were being chopped down.
