The name “Laura Lewis” will appear on the ballot next to “Norma Smith” in the November general election.

Lewis, a last-minute, write-in candidate, received enough votes from District 10 voters in the primary election to qualify to have her name on the ballot. The last ballots were counted and the election was certified Sept. 1.

Lewis, a Democrat and a Camano Island resident, decided to challenge Smith (R-Clinton), but didn’t sign up as a write-in candidate until early August. By that time, the mail-in ballots had been out for a week.

Still, Lewis managed to get 928 votes, or about 2 percent of the total. She only needed 1 percent to qualify for the ballot.

“I’m excited and terrified at the same time,” she said.

Although her late start makes her an underdog, Lewis said she plans to campaign hard and is optimistic about her prospects.

“The voters are kind of funny this year and may go for a non-incumbent,” she said.

Smith received a total of 27,511 votes in the district.

In the other District 10 race, Rep. Barbara Bailey (R-Oak Harbor) came out well ahead of challenger Tom Riggs in the election, 25,153 to 14,880 votes.

A total of 25,138 ballots were cast in the Island County primary election. That’s 53.4 percent of registered voters. The statewide voter turnout was just under 41 percent.
