Alan Robinson Hodgkins died Sept. 3, 2016, at Careage of Whidbey in Coupeville.
He was born March 30, 1937, in Boston, Mass., to David and Pauline Hodgkins.
Alan was raised in Maine until, when he was 13 years of age, his father passed and Alan and his mother moved to San Jose, Calif. While in school, Alan worked as a courier for Western Union. He spent his spare time at the San Jose airport, where he developed a fascination for aircraft.
In 1954, Alan enlisted in the U.S. Navy as an aircraft structural mechanic, beginning a 22-year career. He retired in 1976 as an AMSC (E-7). Following retirement, he was employed at Harbor Air, Boeing and Beechcraft in aircraft maintenance and then opened his own shop at Bayview. He was also much involved with restoration of the PBY, which is an integral part of the Oak Harbor PBY Museum. Alan was also a master sheet metal and wood-worker. Alan had his private pilot’s license and was an aircraft owner and an avid pilot.
Alan is survived by his wife Rebecca and son David, of Oak Harbor, and sister Linda and brother David.
A celebration of life for Alan Hodgkins will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19, at Wallin Funeral Home, Oak Harbor with Gary Wallin, certified life celebrant, officiating. Military honors will follow.
