Antoniette “Toni” J. Wahl, age 81, was welcomed into heaven Dec. 3, 2014, at Deaconess Hospital in Spokane, Wash.
At the time of her death, she was living with her son and daughter-in-law, where she had resided for the past four years.
She was born Aug. 23, 1993 to Antonio and Mae Campano in Seattle. When she was young, the family moved to Everett, Wash., and later to Anacortes, Wash.
She was part of a very large family, being the 10th of 11 children. Her father, who immigrated to America from Naples, Italy, at age 15 to live the American Dream, provided for the family with a large produce garden in Anacortes.
While living in Anacortes, Toni met Milton “Mickey” Wahl. Later, on June 25, 1949, they were married. Not long afterward, they moved to Oak Harbor, where Mickey took a job on the Naval Air Station with Civil Service. Together they raised their four children, Marvin, Vicki, Robert and Mary.
Toni was a homemaker whose greatest joy was cooking and baking for her family. She was active in the local Fire Department (Cornet Bay) Ladies Auxiliary “Fire Belles” and helped raise money to purchase new firefighting equipment. Because of the tireless efforts of the Fire Belles, Cornet Bay Fire Hall was built.
Toni was a lifetime member of the Oak Harbor VFW Auxiliary. She also belonged to the Oak Harbor Lutheran Church, where she was baptized.
She was preceded in death by both of her parents, all of her siblings, her husband Mickey of 51 years, her son Marvin and her daughter Vicki.
She is survived by her son Robert and his wife, Paula, of Spokane; daughter Mary and her husband, William Box, of Oak Harbor; and her son-in-law Mike of Sedro-Woolley, Wash.
Toni is also survived by eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was known by many others simply as “Grandma.”
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, at Grand View Cemetery in Anacortes.
