Audrey Proft

Audrey Joy Proft, 81, a 17-year resident of Coupeville, died at Whidbey General Hospital on Tuesday, Dec. 20.

Audrey was born on Feb. 20, 1924, in Milwaukee, Wisc., to Alex Joers and Ida (Colts) Joers. She attended Milwaukee schools, graduating from North Division High School. She attended nursing school at the Milwaukee Adult and Technical College and eventually became a Licensed Practical Nurse. On Aug. 26, 1945, Audrey married George E. Proft at St. Boniface Church in Milwaukee. The couple resided in the Milwaukee area for 23 years, moving to Edmonds, back to Milwaukee, then Huntington Station, Long Island, N.Y., Kirkland and finally Coupeville in 1988. Audrey had been a practicing Lutheran in Milwaukee and a Sunday School teacher in Milwaukee and New York. She was a member of the Whidbey Whirlers and the Fidalgo Fog-Cutters. She was an ardent seamstress.

She is survived by her husband George, at home; two sons, Edward Charles Proft and wife Lawana, formerly of the Island County Sheriff’s Office and Gerald Paul Proft and wife Gail of Milwaukee; two daughters, Mary Wallace and husband Steve of Burien and Barbara Ann Post and husband Daniel J. of San Antonio, Texas; 10 grandchildren; also, several great-grandchildren.
