Bernice Marguerite Shore

Our mother, Bernice Marguerite Shore, left the surly bonds of this earth to soar into the Kingdom of Light with our Lord on July 14, 2016, after a long illness.

Bernice was born in Ione in Eastern Washington, on March 26, 1925, to Emily and Edwin Wise. Their family pioneered the Metaline Falls area just south of the Canadian border.

She was a farm girl who took up an interest in playing the drums and writing. She always enjoyed a great adventure and made her way to Seattle to work. It was there that she met her husband John Shore Jr., and was married in August 1950.

She took on the responsibility and burden of being both parents while our father was overseas in the military. They were able to live in many states and abroad in Europe before settling in as longtime residents of Oak Harbor.

She really loved the ocean, photography, gardening, crafts and cake design. She was the president of the 4H Kennel Club and represented members at the Island County Fair. She read most of the novels at the library and taught herself to play the piano. She had the ability to find the slightest silver lining in the darkest of clouds.

We miss her dearly but she will always reside in the hearts of her family. We love you, Mom.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Emily and Edwin, and her two sisters, Joyce and Gladys. She is survived by her husband John; daughter Kandy (Jack); son John (Jeri); five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces. If we were to write the end of her story, it would not be, “Happily ever after,” but rather, “To be continued…for the adventure is still afoot.”
