Betty Jean Peck passed away suddenly on Jan. 27, 2009, surrounded by her family. Jean was born Feb 29, 1936, to William and Katherine Busby. She was raised in Auburn until she was in the eighth grade. She then moved Mount Vernon and graduated from Mount Vernon High School. She went onto Western Washington University and received her Registered Nursing Certification. While at WWU she married George Peck, also from Mount Vernon, on March 22, 1958. After making their first home in Belfair, they then moved to Oak Harbor where they have been for 47 years in their home overlooking Skagit Bay.
Jean first worked as a surgical nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bellingham, and at Harrison Hospital in Bremerton. She taught Sunday School for 30 years at Oak Harbor First United Methodist Church. Jean loved to teach and taught many nursing classes at Skagit Valley College of Oak Harbor and clinical nursing classes to prospective nursing students at Oak Harbor High School.
Jean is survived by her husband George for 50 wonderful years; sisters Marie (Howard) Rider of Gig Harbor, Carol (Glenn) Pearson of Mount Vernon; son Scott (Kim) of Poulsbo; daughter Kristi (John) Sherman of Everett; son Kurt (Elizabeth) of Edmonds; and son Marc of Phoenix. Jean has five wonderful grandchildren, Logan, Lauren, Natalie, Noelle, and Elise who loved her very much and will miss her dearly.
Jean is preceded in death by both of her parents.
Jean was a master of many hobbies and crafts, especially quilting. She spread her love in the garden and supplied many with her fruits and vegetables. She very rarely had idle hands, making items for her loved ones and neighbors. She is loved by many.
Memorial services will be held at Oak Harbor First United Methodist Church on Monday, Feb. 2, at 1 p.m.
