Betty Jean Tinius, age 86, of Coupeville, passed away at Careage of Whidbey on Sunday, March 30, 2008.
Mrs. Tinius was born in Seattle on Dec. 21, 1921, to Leon Case and Edna Mae (Jorgenson) Case. She attended Seattle schools, graduating from Lincoln High School. She then attended the University of Washington for several years. On Nov. 20, 1942 Betty married Daniel J. Tinius. They made their home in the Seattle area. In 1958 the she moved with her family to Los Angeles, where Betty worked as a clerk for the California Employment Development Department.
Betty and Dan had a passion for boating, and lived for a number of years on their sailboat, the Oceana. Their marine adventures included cruises on the Oceana to Mexico and Hawaii. In 1973 the couple sailed to Tahiti, a jaunt that lasted until 1976. In 1981 they sailed to Hawaii, then north to Dutch Harbor, Alaska, and back through the Inside Passage to the waters of Puget Sound. At this point they returned to Los Angeles to complete their careers. Following their retirement in 1986, they moved to Burlington and then built a home in Coupeville. Betty was a member of the International Order of Rainbow Girls when she was younger.
Betty is survived by her husband Dan, at home in Coupeville; her three sons, Jeff and wife Debbie of Snohomish, Brian and wife Doris of Los Angeles, and Brad and wife Mindy of Everett; four grandchildren, Dustin in Southern California, Judd and wife Pieta in Antigua, Sarah of Seattle and Megan of Everett; also by one sister Virginia Anderson of Colorado. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Doll and Eleanor Buckner.
A celebration of Betty’s life will take place at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, 710 2nd Avenue, Suite #900, Seattle, WA 98104.
