Betty Juanita Holland born Jan. 1, 1935, in Nowata, Okla., to Luther and Ida Holland, passed away on Nov. 18, 2009 at Whidbey General Hospital.
Betty is survived by twin brothers, Jay Holland of Wenatchee and Ray Holland of the Philippines. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Jack Holland.
Blinded early in life, she became proficient in Braille in order to help other blind children. She learned to convert children’s books into Braille using a Braille writer, or sometimes manually, converting the text into Braille, then pasting the translation over the original text.
Betty had been a resident of Whidbey Island Manor since June 2003. The manager and staff of this facility are to be commended for their service to Betty. In spite of being blind, she was graciously served by the staff with dignity and compassion.
Betty was a member of the Oak Harbor Church of Christ. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Burley Funeral Chapel of Oak Harbor.
A Memorial Service honoring her life will be held at the Oak Harbor Church of Christ, 1000 N.E. Koetje St., on Monday evening, Nov. 30, at 6:30 p.m.
