Charles D. Stratton, 94, of Coupeville, died Nov. 24, 2008 in Seattle. He was born March 24, 1914 in Jordan, Mont., to William F. and Maude C. (Bluff) Stratton.
During World War II, Charles served in the United States Army Air Corps as an Airplane Propeller Specialist. He was stationed in France and England and was proud to tell the story of how he served during the same time as Jimmy Stewart. He especially bragged about how he got to play the accordion with him.
On March 27, 1960, Charles married Kathryn Rose Klemo in Whitehall, Mont. They were blessed with two children, Ralph and Erena. Kathryn passed away on Aug. 4, 2008.
During his life, Charles did gold mining, logging and cattle ranching in Montana, as well as ranching in Oregon. He was a 4-H leader for 20 years, leading both his children’s clubs. Charles and Kathryn lived on Whidbey Island for 15 years.
Charles enjoyed rocks and geology, gardening with his wife, music and playing his accordion. He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion.
Surviving Charles are his two children: Ralph Stratton of Coupeville and Erena and husband Mike of Deer Island, Ore.; grandson Andrew Stratton of Bellingham; and sister-in-law Charlotte Klemo of Coupeville.
Charles was preceded in death by his wife Kathryn, his parents, and brothers Freddie, Bill, John, and Howard.
A family memorial service will be held at the time the urn is placed at Willamette National Cemetery.
