Charles (Chuck) Fakkema … peacefully traveled home to be with his Lord & Savior on March 27, 2022; reuniting with his wife Marlene.
Chuck was born January 10, 1934 to Chris and Della Fakkema in Oak Harbor, WA. Chuck attended O.H.H.S. Upon Graduation he knew he wanted to serve his Country. He enlisted in the Navy at the age of 18. While on leave he met the love of his life Marlene Cornish; One year later they married. Chuck changed branches of the Military transferring from US Navy to US Air force. Chuck courageously served in the Vietnam War and was awarded the Airman’s Medal. He and his fellow crew members landed their H-U16 aircraft in extreme rough conditions in the South China Sea rescuing four downed airmen. Chuck was a decorated war hero and finally retired after 20 years of Service.
Chuck moved his family back to Oak Harbor, where he, his wife, and Sons, began a successful business career as owner of Westgate Homes. Chuck was the mainstay of the business, which continues after 50 years serving the local community and beyond. Chuck was president of the Manufactured Home Association from 1988-1992. He gave back to the community of Oak Harbor as President of Oak Harbor Rotary 1997-1998. During this time he was granted The Paul Harris Fellow Award. Chuck and Marlene loved to cruise, especially on Princess Cruise lines They sailed for over 35 journeys from Alaska to the Mediterranean. Chuck enjoyed playing basketball and golfed well into his 70’s.
He was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather who enjoyed many trips to Disneyland with al his grandchildren. What a legacy, what a life. For all you did and all you are, thank you Dad.
Chuck was preceded in death by his parents Chris and Della Fakkema, his Brother John M. Fakkema and his forever love Marlene M Fakkema
Chuck is survived by his son’s Brian (Shirley), Kevin (Marcia), Alan (Annie), Chuck’s Grandchildren … Chris, Mark, Gregory (Maureen) Chase (Andrea), Madison, Mason, and Marissa.
A Graveside service will be held at Maple Leaf Cemetery April 15th 1pm with a reception to follow at Wallin-Stucky Funeral Home.
