Charles ‘Pappy’ Furneaux. Jr.

Charles H. “Pappy” Furneaux, Jr., 83, longtime resident of Oak Harbor, died at his home on Nov. 5, 2002, following a lengthy illness.

Mr. Furneaux was born in Newton, Mass., Aug. 21, 1919, to Charles H. Furneaux and Florence G. (McPhee) Furneaux. He attended school in Newton and graduated from high school in that area. Following high school graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam Conflict. During World War II, he was stationed in the Solomon Islands of the South Pacific. He retired in 1978 as a master chief (E-9), having served his country for 34 years.

On Sept. 12, 1944, Pappy married Shirley Slocomb in Traverse City, Mich. They lived in Trinidad, British West Indies; Jacksonville and Key West, Fla.; San Diego and Memphis, Tenn., before coming to Whidbey Island Naval Air Station. Following his retirement from the Navy, he was employed at Texaco Refinery in Anacortes, and in maintenance at TSI. He also was active as a volunteer at NAS Whidbey Hospital and Retired Veterans activities. Pappy attended Base Chapel. He was an ardent fly fisherman and taught fly-tying at Skagit Valley College.

Pappy is survived by two daughters, Carol McCallion and husband Dan Branscum of Langley and Sherylann Furneaux of Oak Harbor; three grandchildren, Charles C. Barnes of San Diego, Loriann Bake of Holloman Air Force Base, N.M., and David Thomas Marshall of Wenatchee; also, one sister, Lori MacMath of Danville, Calif. He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley on June 3, 2001, and by one son, Charles Furneaux III on July 22, 1996.

A memorial graveside will be Sunday, Nov. 10, 2 p.m. at Maple Leaf Cemetery, Pastor James Lindus officiating. A reception will follow at the CPO Club.
