David Hinshaw

David “Dave” Hinshaw, age 67, lost his brief battle with kidney cancer on July 21, 2014, at Island Hospital, Anacortes, Wash. His wife, Diana “Dani” Hinshaw, and daughter, Lisa Hill, were privileged to be at his side as he passed into the kingdom of heaven.

Survivors include his wife, Dani Hinshaw of Oak Harbor; daughter Lisa Hill and her husband, Dave Hill, and their two sons, Aaron and Matthew, all of Virginia Beach, Va.; and siblings Sandy, William, Nancy, Robert and DeeAnn. Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Roberta and Willard Hinshaw, and brothers Bruce and Wayne.

At the age of 17, Dave enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Two years later he met and married Dani in Coos Bay, Ore., and, shortly thereafter, they completed their family with the addition of their daughter, Lisa.

The family traveled extensively during Dave’s active duty years, enjoying duty stations in Oregon, Guam, Florida, Alaska, Wales and Washington.

In 1986, OTCM Dave Hinshaw received orders to NAS Whidbey as the first Command Master Chief of NOPF (formerly NAVFAC Whidbey Island). Dave and Dani set down roots in Oak Harbor following his Navy retirement in 1990 after 26 years of active duty service. Dave then worked for 12 years at the Navy Exchange, hired first as a warehouseman and ultimately retiring from the Navy Exchange as foreman. Always a hard worker, Dave was not yet content with full retirement and worked several years for NMCI in their warehouse before becoming a full-time outdoor enthusiast.

Dave was an active member of the Retired Chief Petty Officer’s Association (RCPOA), serving as the president of the local chapter for two terms.

Dave had a passion for the outdoors; camping, hunting and fishing were his life’s joy. Rasar State Park in Concrete, Wash., became his home away from home, and he would often spend months of each year as camp host. Dave’s dedication to Rasar was recently recognized when he was selected as the 2013 Volunteer of the Year.

Dani will host a gathering in celebration of his life at American Legion Post 129, 690 SE Barrington Drive, Oak Harbor, from 4-6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2.

To honor Dave’s love of Rasar, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Rasar State Park. Donations can be accepted by mail at Rasar State Park, 38730 Cape Horn Road, Concrete, WA 98237, or by telephone at 360-826-3942. Donations should be identified “In Memory of Dave Hinshaw” fund.

Friends and family are encouraged to visit Dave’s page in the Book of Memories at www.wallinfuneralhome.com to share memories and condolences.
