Dorothy Mae Maylor, fondly known as Mom, Aunt Mary, and Grandma Mary, is at rest. Mary was born in Los Angeles on March 30, 1921, and passed away at her home in Oak Harbor on Sept. 3, 2008.
At a young age Mary came to Whidbey Island with her family, and they made their home in Coupeville where Mary graduated from high school. She began her work life on a Whidbey Island farm where she cooked meals for the farmhands. A fast learner and creative woman, Mary became one of the best cooks around. She was well known for her homemade pies.
In 1943 Mary met and fell in love with Randolph “Haley” Maylor and was his bride for 50 years. Together they enjoyed gardening, fishing, crabbing, clamming, playing cards and time with their family and friends.
During the 60s and 70s, Mary worked at the Queen Ann Motel and the King’s Table restaurant. She did a variety of work, but being in the kitchen was her favorite.
Once retired, Mary enjoyed many camping trips around the state with Haley. She was an excellent seamstress and loved to crochet, knit and make items for others to cherish. For 56 years Mary was a loyal member of the Oak Leaf Rebekah Lodge. She was a Boy Scout den mother, member of the Oak Harbor Garden Club, Vagabonds and Oak Harbor Senior Center. In her later years, Mary’s weekly highlight was being with her friends for a shared lunch and an afternoon of bingo.
Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Randolph Maylor and stepsons, Wesley Maylor and Robert Maylor. She is survived by her son, Dennis (Sally) Maylor, many step grandchildren, step great grandchildren, step great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and their families. She was loved by all and will be missed.
At Mary’s request no traditional funeral service will be held; however, a celebration of her life is being planned and will be announced in the near future. The family suggests that remembrances may be made to the Oak Harbor Senior Center, Oak Leaf Rebekahs or their charity of choice. Arrangements were entrusted to Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.
