Edward H. “Herb” Pope, Jr., 83, died at Whidbey General Hospital on May 3, 2002. He was born Jan. 9, 1919, in Seattle to Edward H. and Kathryn (Mickens) Pope.
Mr. Pope was raised in the Mount Baker area of Seattle and attended Franklin High School. He moved to Alaska after completing high school and was married to Emily Barbara Vogel on Kodiak Island, Aug. 29, 1941. He served with the U.S. Army in World War II and was a part of the Rainbow Division.
Mr. Pope returned to Seattle following the war and settled in Beaux Arts Village of Bellevue in 1947. He was employed in banking for a short time. In 1955 he went to work for the Equitable Life Assurance Company of New York, a career which lasted 33 years. In 1959, the Pope family moved to the Pine Lake area of Issaquah. In 1983, they moved to Maple Valley and then to Ocean Shores in 1988. They became permanent residents of Coupeville in the fall of 1995.
Mr. Pope was an avid Mariners fan. He loved camping, RV’ing, clam digging, gardening and home building projects.
Mr. Pope is survived by his wife, Emily at the family home in Coupeville; by two children, Ann Pope and her partner Katherine Moulton of Coupeville, and Edward “Ted” Pope III and his wife Marsha of Richfield, Minn., and one brother Gordon Pope of Las Vegas. One grandson Scott Kietzmann (Sarah) and one great grandchild Josie Kietzmann, all of St. Louis Park, Minn., also survive.
Mr. Pope requested no formal funeral services be conducted. The family will hold a private service. Cremation was held with private family inurnment to follow at a later date.
