Betty, Elizabeth Tuck departed our lives on Memorial Day, 5/27/2013. She had suffered a severe stroke that completely disabled her. Betty was born in the Bronx, N.Y. on January 31, 1925 the youngest of three children conceived by Joseph and Edna Kammel.
Her brother Harry and sister Edna preceded Betty in passing leaving Betty the sole survivor of the family. The family resided in Rockville Centre, N.Y. where Betty attended St. Agnes school graduating in 1943. She was a popular young lady who made many life long friends who she will now be reacquainted with. She and her future husband, John, met while both were attending high school.
After graduating Betty took a secretarial course that resulted in her finding employment as a private secretary with a company in New York . She was happy and content, enjoying her life, job and future. She lived with her parents, did volunteer work at the local hospitals and made the most of the social life available in those days.
She became reacquainted with John after his return from overseas. After a short courtship they were married on July 3, 1946. They made their home in upstate NY for about a year and then John was recalled to active duty in 1947. This lead to an entirely different life for Betty as the next 25 years were spent as a military wife, raising five children while making many moves from one base to another never staying longer then a few years at each location. She particularly enjoyed her stay in Japan.
After John’s retirement in 1973 Betty and the family made their home in California for a year or so and then moved to Whidbey Island Wa. In 1976.
Betty quickly adapted to her new lifestyle joining several organizations and volunteering her efforts whenever needed. Betty found a job to her liking working at a dress store in Oak Harbor for several years. She didn’t really care for sailing but gamely accompanied her husband on many trips during the sailing phase of their lives.
Betty was a beautiful, loving and caring person who’s main concern in her life was to keep her children and her husband safe and happy. She was completely unselfish.
She leaves her husband John, daughters Pamela, Patricia and Penelope and sons John Jr. and James, their spouses , children, grand children, and great grand children. She can be satisfied and content knowing that she had a marvelous career as a mother and housewife successfully raising and caring for her family. She wanted nothing more than that and can rest in peace knowing she has truly succeeded. Her passing has created an irreplaceable void in our lives.
I would like to express our appreciation and gratitude to the excellent staff, doctors and care givers at the Whidbey General Hospital who took wonderful care of Betty for the few days she was a patient there and to the staff and hospice people who cared for her at the Whidbey Regency Care where she also received similar treatment. I would also like to thank all who conveyed their sympathy and prayers for Betty with their cards, flowers and calls. John. R. Tuck and Family.
