Eva Young

Eva Young, a 19-year resident of Oak Harbor, went to be with her Lord Feb. 9, 2005, at Careage of Whidbey.

Mrs. Young was born Jan. 19, 1921, in Waldo, Ark., to Ellis and Mattie (Watkins) Perry, where she grew up and attended Waldo High School. Oct. 13, 1939, she married Thomas H. Young, Jr. in Waldo. They subsequently moved to Saba, Texas, where all of their five children were born. They later spent several years working in migrant camps before settling in Newberg, Ore., to raise their family.

Eva worked at many things during her life, first in migrant camps, then in canneries and later as a babysitter. In 1986 she moved to Oak Harbor to live with her daughter Janie. She enjoyed being here, but also missed her family in Oregon and Arkansas. She spent a lot of time writing to family so she could continue to be a part of their lives.

Eva loved reading her Bible and cooking. She also liked to garden and for a number of years raised her own vegetables. She loved animals and especially “Spunky” a now 15-year-old Terrie-Poo dog that her daughter, Janie, adopted a number of years ago. In recent days at Whidbey Island Manor and Careage of Whidbey she looked forward to visits from Janie, because Janie always brought Spunky along.

She is survived by her daughter Janie Young of Oak Harbor, sons John Young, wife Laura, and Joe Young with wife Tola all of Newberg, Ore. She is also survived by her son Thomas H. Young, III with wife Sherron of Drain, Ore., and daughter Elizabeth Young-Randol and husband Howard of Oceanside, Calif. She is also survived by one sister, Gladys Kilpatrick of Stamps, Arkansas, 10 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Eva was preceded in death by brothers Herbert Perry, Grady Perry and James Perry, as well as sisters Willie Mae Perry-Hutcheson and Christeen Perry. She was also preceded in death by grandson Jimmy Young.

A private family visitation at Burley Funeral Chapel was held Feb. 12 with a private family service and burial in Newberg, Ore., to be announced.
