George G. Martin passed away on Dec. 15, 2006 at Overlake Hospital in Bellevue after a long battle with cancer and complications.
He was born Jan. 25, 1923, in Lawndale, Calif., the son of Jennie and Garnet Martin. While he was still an infant his family moved north and he was raised in Nome, Alaska. During World War II, he joined the Army Combat Engineers.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Judy, whom he married in 1978. They moved to Whidbey Island the following year. He is also survived by his daughter, Kathleen (Chris) Kirk; grandchildren, Adam and Hillary; son-in-law, Jim Springberg; grandsons, Scot and Larry (Joney); and great-grandchildren, Sydney and Seamus. His daughter Jamie and brother Tom preceded him in death.
George spent most of his working career as a heavy equipment operator in the greater Seattle area. In his words he “helped to destroy the beauty of the Eastside and Bellevue area.” He was active in building the original building of Overlake Hospital, where he died.
He really enjoyed his retirement to his “lake home” and the laid back lifestyle of Whidbey Island.
At his request, no services will be held. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Arrangements are under the direction of Visser Funeral Home, Langley.
