Gertrude J. â??Trudyâ?? Edmonston

Gertrude J. “Trudy” Edmonston passed away on April 26, 2008, at Homeplace Special Care Center, Oak Harbor at the age of 94. She was born to Raymond and Ellen Smith in Rosemont, Penn., on Oct. 20, 1913.

Trudy was raised in the Washington, D.C. area. At age 17 she was married to Joseph C. Edmonston. Together they raised six children in the Arlington, Va., area. During World War II, she went to work for the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey.

Following the war, Trudy was transferred to California and the Menlo Park office. She continued with the U.S.C.& G. until her retirement in 1964. Joe died in 1973 and Trudy eventually left California, moving to Grants Pass, Ore., to be near her daughter. Two years later, in 1990, she moved to Oak Harbor. She purchased a home here and remained living on her own until one month ago. Trudy was a talented artist and seamstress. She always did well at whatever she tried.

Trudy is survived by six children: William Edmonston of Centreville, Md.; Joan Raab of Edmonds; George “Dick” Edmonston of Selbyville, Del.; Raymond Edmonston of Oak Harbor, John Edmonston of Camino, Calif., and Teresa Lichenstein of Grants Pass. Seventeen grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren also survive.

Cremation was held. Her remains will be buried with her husband Joseph at Fort Lincoln Cemetery in Brentwood, Md., the month of May. Arrangements are entrusted to Burley Funeral Chapel.
