Gladys Freda Miles

Gladys Freda Miles went to be with her Lord Jan. 21, 2005, at the age of 93. She was born Feb. 12, 1911, in Lansing, Mich., one of 12 children born to Fred and Bertha (Ni Herschska) Neuman.

Gladys was raised in Lansing. During her high school years she was very active in athletics, including swimming and basketball. Sept. 29, 1933, she was married to Ronald E. Miles in Lansing, Mich. Gladys became a homemaker and stay-at-home mom, raising two sons, Robert and Richard.

Gladys and her family followed Ron Miles’ career with General Motors and in 1938, they moved to Detroit. Gladys and Ron remained in Detroit until 1979, when they made Oak Harbor their permanent home. They purchased a home in Western Village Mobile Estates and Gladys began building her flower garden. She took pride in having the most beautiful garden in the park. Gladys became a member of First Reformed Church of Oak Harbor. She was a member of the Golden Oaks senior group at the church. Gladys and Ron also became active bowlers.

Ronald Miles died in 1991 and Gladys eventually moved into Harbor Towers assisted living. The last three years of her life were spent at Mathis Adult Family Home in Oak Harbor.

Two sons and their spouses survive Gladys: Robert W. “Bob” Miles and Nancy of Oak Harbor and Richard E. “Dick” Miles and Barbara of Mancelona, Mich. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Lawrence Miles of Vancouver, Gary Miles of Lynden, Sharon Miles Kellett of Snohomish, Denise Miles Tagami of Atlanta, Ga., and Scott Miles of Jacksonville, Fla.; ten great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Gladys was preceded in death by her parents and 11 brothers and sisters.

Celebration of Life services were held Jan. 25 at Burley Funeral Chapel with Gladys’s grandson, Pastor Gary Miles, and Pastor Ron Willis of Family Bible Church officiating. Cremation was held with private internment at Maple Leaf Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.
