Harry was born Nov. 27,1923, in Cooleenee, N.C., to Ammarae and Surma Spry. He peacefully passed away at home in the early morning hours of June 15, 2010, at the age of 86.
Harry married Alice Jackson June 4, 1947; they recently celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary.
Harry served our country with the US Navy from 1941 to 1963. He retired after 22 years of service in the Department of Aircraft Internment machines, stationed out of Whidbey Island. In 1964 Harry accepted a career with the US Customs that would keep him and Alice on the Montana-Canadian border until his retirement 27 years later. They then returned to Oak Harbor in 1991 to be closer to their three granddaughters.
Harry loved the Lord and was a member of the Concordia Lutheran Church. He also prided himself in taking great care of his wife; in 63 years he never forgot her birthday or their anniversary.
Harry is survived by his loving wife Alice and their precious dog Princess; son Fred Spry, daughter-in-law Linda Hilsinger; granddaughters Vicky (Kevin) O’Bryan, Ginnie (Gary) Sutton and Christina Spry; great-grandchildren Leslee, Tyler, Niea, Brittany(Gabe), Bodee, Kortney and Dustin.; and great-great grandchildren Ayden, Sophia, Drayden and Paycee. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother.
The family wishes to express gratitude to Whidbey General Hospital, Dr. Ann Dannhauer, Michaela and the girls at Homewatch Caregivers. Without them and Christina, Harry would not have been able to spend his last days in the comfort of his own home. And to pastor Palm whom Harry and Alice have called upon many times; he always found the time for a visit.
A celebration of Harry’s life will be held June 22, at 2 pm. at Bow Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Burley Funeral Chapel in Oak Harbor.
