Helen Grunwald

Helen Grunwald was born Feb. 20, 1912 in Northport, Wash., to Henry and Lena Broderious. She passed away Nov. 20, 2006.

She grew up in Northport and graduated from Northport High School in 1929.  She studied to become a medical assistant and worked in Spokane for six years assisting two doctors.  Helen met Fred Grunwald in Spokane and married him on Nov. 7, 1936. They went on to celebrate 60 years of marriage.  They lived in Seattle, Portland, Astoria and came to Oak Harbor in 1953.

Helen was a charter member of PEO chapters EU and IJ.  She loved cooking, homemaking and was the family cribbage champ.  She volunteered in school programs for a number of years.  She felt very fortunate to have lived 94 years in good health and appreciated the many helpful neighbors and friends that helped to look after her.

She was preceded in death by her brother Harvey, sister Grace and her husband Fred.  She is survived by her two sons, Gerald and wife Margaret of Oak Harbor and Kenneth and wife Gaylen of Clackamas, Ore. and five grandchildren:  Barbara Monteiro, Scott Grunwald, Jeff Grunwald, Jason Grunwald and Julie Grunwald and eleven great grandchildren.  She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

By her request there will be no formal funeral.  Memorials may be made to the Blind and Partially Sighted, 9709 Third Ave NE, #100, Seattle, WA 98115-2027.
