James W. Evans, Sr., 64, of Oak Harbor, died March 27, 2003. He was born Oct. 31, 1938, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Rufus Arvil and Elizabeth Ellen Evans. James spent his childhood in Cleveland, and at the age of 16 joined and served in the U.S. Army from April 15 to Aug. 1, 1955. He spent most of his adult life in Chicago where he attended DeVry University for television repair. He worked an assortment of different trades in and around Chicago, from master machinist to a scrap metal salvager.
James traveled the country, briefly staying in Cleveland, Ohio, and Athens, Ga., before coming to Oak Harbor in 1992. He was a regular bingo player at Oak Harbor Senior Center and the Oak Harbor American Legion. While with the American Legion Post No. 129 he attained the positions of junior vice commander, historian and sergeant at arms.
James spent his golden years in Oak Harbor in the care of Carolyn and Robert O’Dell’s home. James is survived by James W. Evans, Jr., Robert Evans, Lucille Evans and Michael Evans.
