John Wilber Britton

John Britton passed away on May 18, 2008. He was born in Batavia, N.Y., to Ida Wheeler and John Britton.

During WWII he proudly served in the Merchant Marines. When he left the service he wen to to work as a welder for Yale & Town in Batavia, N.Y., Young Brothers in Rochester, N.Y., and finally retired from NASCO Shipyards in San Diego, where he helped build the Exxon Valdez.

He was preceded in death by his brothers Francis Britton of Spanish Fort, Ala., Lloyd Britton of Rochester, N.Y., and his son Gene Britton of King, N.C. He is survived by his children: Bob Britton of Marilla, N.Y., Jim Britton of Jacksonville, Fla., Carol Britton of Alexander, N.Y., and Johnny Britton of Australia; seven stepchildren, 22 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren and his wife, Dorothy Britton.

John spent the last ten months of his life in the home of his stepdaughter, Joyce Claus, in Coupeville and was thrilled to be back on Whidbey Island after a three year absence.

He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Memorial services will be announced.
