Katherine Denson, 81, entered into rest March 5, 2008, at Richmond Beach Rehab in Shoreline. She was born Aug. 16, 1926, in Kellogg, Idaho, to Francis and Myrtle Stout. She grew up in Seattle and enjoyed summer days swimming in Green Lake with friends.
Kathy’s father taught her to love books and her mother imbued in her a sense of art. In later years she became a gifted painter.
Kathy met the love of her life, a member of the U.S. Navy, Fred C. Denson. They were married Aug. 19, 1943. About a year and-a-half later their first child, Penny, was born, followed a couple of years later with a son, Fred, Jr.
Kathy and Fred, or “Tex” as many knew him, enjoyed every day of their lives together. Kathy once said that she never knew what it was like to fall out of love. Some of her happiest days were spent as a young bride and mother in Newhalem, Wash. Both of her children lived a very happy childhood.
Kathy never took a commitment lightly. In retirement she and Fred devoted themselves to the Coupeville Lions Club and the Coupeville United Methodist Church. Kathy was the Charter President of the Lioness Club, 1986-87. For 24 years, she served on the Lions Blood Bank, Eye Bank and hearing services. She was a founder of the Lions’ Garage Sale and served the Lions Methodist Dinner for over 20 years. As if that was not enough, Kathy served on the Election Board in Coupeville for 22 years.
Kathy is survived by her daughter Penny and son Fred, grandchildren Adam and Lisa, Mila and Mike, Wayne and Trish, seven great-grandchildren: Gwen, CJ, Andrew, Jessica, Hunter, Amanda and Abigail. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband and her granddaughter, Sheila.
A celebration of Kathy’s life will be held at the Coupeville United Methodist Church on Wednesday, March 12, at 2 p.m. The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Providence Hospice in Bellevue or the Coupeville Lions “Fred C. Denson Scholarship Fund.” Arrangements were entrusted to Burley Funeral Chapel.
