Lifelong resident of Whidbey Island, Kenneth Schillinger, passed away on the morning of June 25th in his home at the age of 71. Ken was born in Seattle on February 1, 1952, to Justin and Borghild Schillinger.
Ken worked for the Washington State Ferries for the entirety of his career. In his words, “you couldn’t ask for a better office view.” During this time, he made cherished friendships with those he worked alongside.
In 1999, Ken married his beloved wife, Marta. Marta is originally from Costa Rica, and Ken soon fell in love with Costa Rica and all of Marta’s family as well.
After retiring, Ken focused on his many hobbies. For a time, he served as President of the Fair Board and Master of the Deer Lagoon Grange. Ken had a strong sense of community and enjoyed all social aspects of life. Whether spending time with family, participating in HAM radio activities, eating out with the R.O.M.E.O.’s (that’s retired old men eating out), or having a drink with old friends at the Holmes Harbor Rod & Gun Club, Ken spent his days enjoying life to the fullest.
Ken is survived by his wife of 23 years, Marta Schillinger, and his daughters Jessi Mohar of Tulalip, WA, and Sara Schillinger of Seattle, WA.
A burial service was held at the Sunnyside Cemetery in Coupeville on July 1st. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Holmes Harbor Rod & Gun Club from 2-5 p.m. on August 6th, 2023.
