Larry J. Rector, 68, of Vancouver, Wash., and formerly of Oak Harbor, passed away on Feb. 27, 2016 at the Sunnyside Hospital.
Larry spent 14 years serving in the Navy as a chaplain. He continued preaching at the Oak Harbor Church of Christ when he left the Navy. Larry spent 15 years with the church. Larry’s love for teaching the Bible was evident if you were lucky enough to hear him preach or teach a class. After preaching, Larry stayed in the ministry teaching Bible classes at the First United Methodist Church for five years. Larry and his wife Charlotte moved to Vancouver, Wash., shortly after their granddaughter Paetyn was born.
Larry loved baseball. He loved yelling at the umpires even more. Being around the game of baseball was a joy for him. From coaching Little League, to sitting with the dads watching the Oak Harbor High School team play, and last year watching his grandson Maddux play ball, he loved being there.
Larry is survived by his wife Charlotte of 44 years, sons Zachary and Jeremiah Rector, daughter-in-law Lindsay, granddaughter Paetyn and grandson Maddux.
A memorial gathering with a potluck luncheon will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at the First Reformed Church. Larry’s colleague and friend, David Lura, will host the informal gathering. Friends are invited to come and go as their schedules permit.
Larry’s memorial service and military honors were held at the Willamette Military Cemetery near Portland, Ore., on March 10.
