Beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, Lennart ‘Swede’ Carlson was born Oct. 21, 1920, in Lockne, Sweden, and passed away on July 4, 2008, in Olympia.
He was proceeded in death by Edna his wife and companion of 68 years. He is survived by his daughter Gail Korsak and son-in-law George; grandchildren Rick and Mike Conrads and Denise Hauck; great-grandchildren Tyler, Mitchell and Kylee Conrads, Dustin and Mariah Hauck; sister-in-law Pauline Carlson; cousin Roy Widen of Mount Vernon; nieces Janey Funston of Sequim Judy Falk of Monroe; nephew Jim Olsen of Lebanon, Ore.; lifelong friend Patricia Ross of Bothell; and his little friend Bear and his friend Sassy.
After graduating Ballard High School in 1940, Len served in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII. Employed by the Civil Service, he worked for many years at Pier 91 in Seattle, and then worked at NAS Whidbey Island. He retired from federal service in 1976 and went on to work for P & L Construction for another 15 years before completely retiring.
Len, “Swede,” “Gramps,” “Grampa Swede” had a zest for life especially if it was with his grandchildren or on his motorcycle or sailboat. He also was very active in the past with The Washington State Sportsman Council, directing and co-directing the Jr. Sportsman’s boys camp at Camp Moran on Orcas Island for 22 years.
Visitation for Len will be held at Burley Funeral Chapel Friday, July 11, from 9 a.m. to noon followed by a graveside service at Maple Leaf Cemetery at 1 p.m. Following that will be a memorial service at Oak Harbor Lutheran Church at 2 p.m. The family suggests donations be made to the Oak Harbor Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or a charity of your choice. Arrangements were entrusted to Burley Funeral Chapel.
