Linda Porter

Linda Elizabeth Porter, 56, of Oak Harbor, longtime educator, died at her home on Dec. 18, 2005, following a brief battle with cancer.

Linda was born in Port Townsend on April 21, 1949, to Harry Porter and Betty (Rouse) Porter. She graduated from International Falls High School in Minnesota. She attended the University of Washington, graduating with an MEd in Special Education. She taught for many years in elementary schools and at the college level. She was most recently employed in the Mount Vernon School District.

Linda was a devoted teacher who inspired students others found hard to reach. She was a consummate athlete who enjoyed and excelled at many sports, including running in marathons. She was married to Jeff Harala, and the couple made their home in Oak Harbor on Whidbey Island.

Linda loved animals, raising Akita dogs, and always had a cat friend at her side who inspired many funny stories. She was a Master Gardener with a special love of roses. She loved a good discussion of politics and spent each early morning over coffee with Jeff doing just that. She always loved a good song and argument. Linda was a loyal and trusted friend to many, and was sought for her wise counsel. She was a voracious reader with myriad interests, reading everything from current political analysis to Robert Frost. She especially shared her love of reading with her father, Harry Porter.

Linda spent many years on Rainy Lake, where she developed and co-owned a successful resort, serving as an Island View Village Councilman. She was often seen running on the Black Bay Hills in training for marathons. She enjoyed hunting and outdoor sports, especially cross-country skiing with her dogs. With her husband Jeff she owned a 41-foot sailing vessel, Aludra, moored at Oak Harbor. Together they had many adventures on the water with their many friends. She and Jeff were restaurateurs in developing a successful Anacortes eating establishment.

Linda is survived by her loving husband, Jeff Harala; brothers Clay and Stuart Porter of Kennewick; mother-in-law Jean Harala; nephews and nieces; many devoted friends; beloved puppy Kiko and cat Gizelda. She was predeceased by her parents, Harry and Betty Porter.
