Lorraine Francis Hampton passed away in Oak Harbor on Sept. 18, 2007, at the home of her daughter. She was born Jan. 27, 1920, in Alberta, Canada, to Clarence and Maude (Baker) Wright.
Lorraine came to the United States as a young girl. She spent much of her early years in Portland, Ore. She left school during the depression to work and help support her family. She was married to Glenn C. Hampton on Oct. 13, 1940.
Glenn was in the U.S. Navy and was assigned to the Seabee’s and was stationed in Alaska. Following the war, he and Lorraine lived in Portland. Eventually they moved to Bremerton, where they were both employed by federal civil service.
Lorraine was assigned as a fleet supply clerk at Naval Station Bremerton. In 1955, they were both transferred to NAS Whidbey Island. Eventually, they were transferred back to Bremerton.
Following retirement, Lorraine and Glenn moved to Mesa, Ariz., where she worked for the J.C. Penney Company. Glenn passed away and Lorraine retired for the second time in 1988. In 1990, she moved to Oak Harbor. She lived with her daughter, Penney, for a time, in her own apartment, at Morning Glory Adult Family Home and finally her last days were with Penney and Cliff. Lorraine loved gardening and often spent much of her day in the garden at her daughter’s home.
Two daughters survive Lorraine: Penney Lee Houghtaling and husband Cliff of Oak Harbor and Peggy Lynne of Gibsonton, Fla. Two grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren also survive. Three sisters, Virginia, Jane and Helene, preceded her in death.
Lorraine requested no formal funeral services be conducted. Cremation was held with a family memorial dinner in the near future to celebrate her eternal life with Jesus. Arrangements were entrusted to Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.
