Lynn Afenir

Lynn Clynn Christine Afenir, 54, died April 22, 2003, at Whidbey General Hospital, Coupeville, after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was born Sept. 17, 1948, in Salem, Ore., to Carl E. and Jean H. (Webb-Bowen) Hultenberg, Jr.

Mrs. Afenir was raised in Pendleton, Ore., and Lewiston, Idaho, and Vancouver. She graduated from Hudson Bay High School in Vancouver in 1966 and attended Western Washington College in Bellingham.

Lynn was employed as a corporate secretary in Portland, Ore., and then for Georgia Pacific in Bellingham for a number of years. She moved to Escondido, Calif., where she met her future husband and worked as an administrative assistant for the Escondido Memorial Hospital. She was medically retired from the hospital. Lynn and Robert D. Afenir were married in Las Vegas Dec. 5, 1987.

Following retirement, Lynn followed her husband’s career to New Jersey, North Carolina and eventually to Washington state in 1999. She had been a resident of Coupeville for the past four years. Lynn loved all things outdoors, but the joy she derived from interaction with fun loving people, was unparalleled in her life. It was said that she could liven the mood anywhere and under all conditions, with just her smile.

Mrs. Afenir is survived by her husband Robert at the family home in Coupeville; by one brother, Carl E. Hultenberg III of Eugene, Ore.; by two sisters, Leslie Hammond of Tucson, Ariz., and Joan Posey of Missouri City, Texas; and by her beloved cats, Walter, Amanda, Boots and Rocky. Her parents preceded her in death.

Private family memorial services were held Friday, April 25 at Coupeville Foursquare Church. Cremation was held with private family inurnment to follow at a later date. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, in gratitude to the wonderful people who carry on a horrific struggle against all odds, while providing strength and comfort to those who suffer with this terrible disease.
