Margaret June Payne was born June 5, 1920, in Salt Lake City, Utah and died Sept. 30, 2009 in Oak Harbor. She was the loving wife of Richard Payne who preceded her in death in 2003, cherished mother of Gary, David and Randy Payne and the adored grandmother of grandsons, Morgan, Cole and Bryce. Gary and his wife Sue live in Boise, Idaho, David Payne lives in Federal Way, Wash., and Randy and his wife Joan and children, Morgan, Cole and Bryce, live in Oak Harbor. Her grandchildren were her greatest pleasure in her later years.
Margaret grew up in Salt Lake City and graduated with a degree in nursing from St. Mark’s College. For most of her professional career, she worked either as a school or a public health nurse. Both she and Dick enjoyed the outdoors and following his work, they lived on forest ranger districts across the West. She spent the last 36 years of her life in Oak Harbor.
Margaret loved people and could make friends with any person she met. Her approach to others was always helpful. She was active in the Methodist Church and volunteered for many community activities.
Margaret’s Alzheimer’s disease during her final years was only a minor inconvenience that did not diminish the enjoyment she found in life or her positive outlook on the life she lived.
