Marian Adele Holmly, 76, passed away on Dec. 27, 2006. She was born in Rolette, N.D., on Sept. 21, 1930, to Albert and Agnes (Oberg) Vettrus.
Marian grew up in Rolette and graduated from Lutheran Brethren High School in Fergus Falls, Minn., in 1948. She married Doyle Holmly on March 1, 1952 in Wichita Falls, Texas, where Doyle was stationed in the Air Force. In 1955, Marian and Doyle both began careers in banking. They moved to Oak Harbor in 1969 where Doyle was employed by Everett Trust & Savings Bank, and Marian worked for Island Savings & Loan. She retired in 1995.
Marian’s favorite pastimes included spending time with family and riding her golf cart around Whidbey Golf & Country Club, observing Doyle, family and friends play golf; while she collected stray golf balls from the surrounding trees and ponds.
Marian was preceded in death by her parents and stepmother Doris Vettrus, brother Robert Vettrus, and an infant sister. She is survived by her husband Doyle; her two sons, David and his wife Kari; and Dan and his wife Diane, all of Oak Harbor. Also surviving Marian is one brother Donald Vettrus of Hendricks, Minn.; six grandchildren, Jason Holmly and Justin Holmly of California; Scott Holmly, Matthew Holmly and Alexa Holmly, of Oak Harbor and Tara Westrich of Lynden; and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Jan. 2 for Marian at the Church of the Nazarene in Oak Harbor. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
