Marion Alvin Hunskor died Oct. 17, 2013, at Mira Vista Care Center in Mount Vernon at the age of 90. Marion was a pioneer Oak Harbor resident, born in Oak Harbor on July 9, 1923, to Carl and Hilda (Olson) Hunskor. He was a member of Oak Harbor High School, class of 1941 and, while in school, played basketball and baseball.
Following graduation, Marion enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard and was a veteran of World War II. With the end of the war, Marion traveled to California and began his commercial fishing career.
From California, he moved on to Ketchikan, Alaska, where he spent many years fishing. He also worked in a pulp mill during the off seasons.
Marion met Elsie Otterlei in Ketchikan and on March 19, 1949, they were married at the First Lutheran Church of Ketchikan. Son Marvin and daughter Maureen soon joined the Hunskor family. Marion decided to return to Oak Harbor in 1959 and the family settled on the original Hunskor property. Marion continued fishing and crabbing and was joined by son Marvin and continued until recently, when his health began to fail. Marion also worked as a carpenter for Parkhurst and Lange and for other contractors for many years.
Marion was a life member and an original signer for the Oak Harbor Lutheran Church.
Much of his life was spent outdoors and he loved walking the beach, clamming and smelt fishing.
Memorial services for Marion will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, at the Oak Harbor Lutheran Church with Pastor Jeff Spencer and Pastor Marc Stroud officiating. A reception for family and friends will follow in the Fellowship Hall. Private family graveside services were held at Maple Leaf Cemetery.
