Marion K. “Vol” Volentine, 75, longtime resident of Anacortes, died March 29, 2003, at his Campbell Lake home following an extended battle with cancer.
Mr. Volentine was born on Feb. 16, 1928, in Athens, La., to John Courtney Volentine and Lili B. (Walker) Volentine. He was raised in Louisiana. Vol entered the US Marine Corps and served his country in both World War II and the Korean Conflict, retiring as a gunnery sergeant after 22 years of service. During his career in the military, he received six awards for good conduct.
On Sept. 15, 1976, he married Joan Lang Pittman in Carlsbad, Calif. They lived in Southern California for several years before moving to Campbell Lake. Vol had also lived for a time at Mount Vernon. After retiring from the Marine Corps, he owned and operated service stations.
He is survived by his wife, Joan, at home; by two daughters, five step-children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives. He will be missed greatly.
Visitation will be Wednesday, April 2 from 1 to 5 p.m. at Burley Funeral Chapel. A graveside service will be Thursday, April 3, at 12 p.m. at Fern Hill Cemetery, Mr. Michael Hennessey officiating. Military honors will be performed by the United States Marine Corps Honor Guard. Arrangements are under direction of Burley Funeral Chapel.
