Michael B. Schmit: April 1, 1944 – June 1, 2024

Michael B. Schmit, a dedicated family man and proud veteran, passed away peacefully on June 1, 2024, at the age of 80. He was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on April 1, 1944, and led a life full of love, adventure, and service.

After attending the University of Minnesota, where he studied Sociology, Michael joined the United States Navy during the Vietnam War and went on to serve his country for 23 years relocating many times before settling in Oak Harbor, WA. His commitment to his country was paralleled only by his love for his family and the great outdoors. He found joy in fishing, camping, hunting, and crabbing, passions he lovingly passed on to his children.

Michael was an active member of his community, contributing his time and skills to various projects at Oak Harbor Church of the Nazarene for many years, in addition to the Community Harvest and the annual Oak Harbor Pig Roast.There, he forged lifelong friendships and left a lasting impact. He was also a longtime member of the North Whidbey Sportsman Association, where he shared his love for the outdoors with others, and actively served on the board of directors.

Michael is survived by his beloved wife, Ila M. Schmit, his children and their spouses: Daniel and Terri Schmit, with their son Travis and Bixby Schmit; Karena and Russ Harmon, with their son Ashton; Marisa and Austin Latour, with their sons Caleb and Dylan; Janina and Tim Collins with daughter Jordan, and his brother Jack and Sharon Schmit.

A funeral service to honor Michael’s life will be held on July 6, 2024, in Oak Harbor, WA at Family Bible Church 2760 Heller St. Oak Harbor, WA 98277 at 11 am. The family invites friends and loved ones to join them in remembering and celebrating his remarkable life and the legacy he leaves behind.
