Nancy Jean Scarpino, age 91, of Oak Harbor, WA, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on March 7, 2025. Nancy was born on April 28, 1933, in Wittenberg, Wisconsin to Roy and Borghild Eleanor (Watland) Kersten.
Nancy grew up in Wittenberg and attended Wittenberg High School. As a kid, she often helped out working at her father’s sawmill doing various jobs. She also loved being a big sister, toting around her brother Philip “Butch” Kersten, who was 11 years younger, and to her brother Richard “Dick” Kersten, who was just 14 months younger than Nancy.
In her early adult years, Nancy had an opportunity to travel for which she was able to visit many cities and states outside of Wisconsin. Unfortunately, Nancy had to return home to help care for her mother Eleanor, who was battling cancer.
Nancy eventually moved to Omaha, Nebraska where she met and was united in marriage to Louis Bernard Scarpino on March 30, 1962. They moved to Blair, NE where they settled and raised their children. Nancy and Louis enjoyed 43 wonderful years together making lifelong memories.
During their marriage, Nancy and Louis adopted five children and fostered a number of other children. Nancy also had an in-home daycare. She took to motherhood naturally and embraced every moment. Her husband Louis was able to provide her with the wonderful opportunity of being a stay-at-home mom. Nancy was known to be a loving, caring, and compassionate person who always put her children, family, and others first.
As the children got older, Nancy found work outside of the home where she was employed as a Certified Nursing Assistant atCrowell Memorial Home, eventually working her way up to the position of Care Staff Member in which she was in charge of theAlzheimer’s Unit. She was passionate about her job and enjoyed the people that she worked with, as well as caring for the residents. Nancy worked at the nursing home for 20+ years, up until the age of 70, when she was forced to retire due to her husband’s declining health. In December of 2004, Nancy and Louis made the decision to move to Oak Harbor, WA, where their youngest daughter lived, so that they might be close to family during Louis’ final months. In 2006, Louis passed away and Nancy moved in with her daughter Renee Lopez and son-in-law Jesus Lopez. She would remain a part of their household for 19+ years, caring for her grandchildren, great-granddaughter, and the family’s many pets.
