Norman Engstrom

Norman Wesley “Norm” Engstrom, 80, died Sept. 23, 2006, with his daughter Carrie, by his side, at Careage of Whidbey, Coupeville. He was born Nov. 12, 1925, in Salina, Kan. In 1936, he moved to Seattle with his parents, Arnold and Edith and brother, Maurice “Buddy” Engstrom.

In 1943, he graduated from Queen Anne High School. Norm was employed by Davies Chevrolet where he worked in the parts department until serving in the Army, during World War II, where he was stationed in Korea.

After being discharged he returned to Davis Chevrolet where he met Margaret Alice “Margie Schafer. They were married in Whitlash, Mont., on Sept. 14, 1951, and made their home in Bellevue. Norm and Margie have two children: W. Mark of Whitlash, Mont. and Carrie Engstrom of Sammamish. Norm has a daughter, Eleanor Engstrom, from a previous marriage, who lives in Manteca, Calif.

In 1984, Norm retired from Brooks McKnight Chevrolet where he was parts manager for 39 years.

In 1988, Margie and Norm moved to Lagoon Point where they could watch the ships passing, the beautiful sunsets, along with the great fishing.

In earlier years Norm enjoyed fishing, and bird and duck hunting with family and friends. He had fond memories of the Montana ranch where Margie grew up. After retiring, Norm became an avid golfer and joined the Whidbey Golf and Country Club where he aced three holes-in-one on hole number seven. Norm continued golfing until this past fall.

He and Margie enjoyed numerous cruises and various trips. They also enjoyed many RV vacations. They were University of Washington Husky Football season ticket holders for many years.

Norm was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, in Freeland, the Elks Lodge in Oak Harbor, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Eagles of Whidbey Island.

Norm will be buried with the love of his life, Margie, in Whitlash, Mont.

Survivors include a son, W. Mark Engstrom and wife, Kathy, of Whitlash; two daughters, Eleanor Engstrom, of Manteca, Calif., and Carrie Engstrom of Sammamish; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margie, of 51 years, his parents, brother, sister-in-law and brother-in-law.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday, Sept. 28 at Trinity Lutheran Church at 11 a.m. Family burial will be held in Whitlash at a later date.

In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society or Trinity Lutheran Church.
