Orlan Douglas Dean, 85, of Puyallup, passed away peacefully, Jan. 15, 2010 with his wife of 61 years at his side.
Orlan, born Feb. 24, 1924 in Coupeville, was the youngest of four siblings. His parents, the late Carl and Vera (Hancock) Dean, were among the early pioneers of this quaint community.
Orlan served his country as a U.S. Marine during World War II and returned from his tour in the Pacific to graduate from the University of Washington. In 1948, he married Damaris (Demy) Davis, and so began a long and happy marriage on “the Island.”
Orlan joined his father at Dean Motor Company in Coupeville and continued in the family business as the owner of Dean Chevrolet until the late 1970’s. Always the gentleman and a genuine people person, he enjoyed many activities. He was a lifelong member of the Coupeville Lions Club, and also enjoyed memberships at Whidbey Golf and Country Club, Oak Harbor Yacht Club and the Navy League.
After a blessed lifetime on Whidbey Island, Orlan’s love for the water was apparent. He enjoyed many summers of camping and water skiing with his young family and later spent time on his sailboats and powerboats. Retirement in 1999 brought Orlan and Demy to Puyallup to be closer to their daughters. It also allowed them to spend winters in the Southwest; as snowbirds traveling in their various RV’s for a time and later at their home in Indio, Calif.
Orlan is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Althea and Bill Riley of Puyallup; granddaughter, Merritt Riley; and sister, Lillian Dean Huffstetler of Coupeville.
Orlan was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Vera Dean; brother, Phillip Dean; sister, Drusilla Dean Lynch; and daughter Paula Dean Keeton.
In honor of his request, no service will be held.
