Pamela Louise Phiefer died at her home in Oak Harbor on Oct. 16, 2011, following a long battle with cancer, surrounded by her family. She was born to Adalbert and Verna J. Kozma in San Fernando, Calif., on July 15, 1952. Pam was raised in Reseda, Calif., graduating from high school in 1970. On Dec. 12, 1970, she married Leonard “Jean” Phiefer, a young sailor, and became a Navy wife.
As her family grew, she served as a Girl Scout leader for daughter Laura and a scorekeeper for son Paul’s baseball games.
The Navy took Pam and Jean to every naval station between San Diego and San Francisco. Pam worked for the Navy Exchange in San Pedro for a time in the security section. Pam enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom when her children were growing up. When Jean retired, they moved to Whidbey Island. Pam loved the fall and winter seasons and longed to see snow, so moving to the Northwest was her dream. In July of 1987, Pam and Jean made Oak Harbor home.
Pam worked in the fields at the Greenbank Farm, the Navy Exchange, Oak Harbor and finally for Sunrise Resort at Deception Pass. She enjoyed ceramics and crocheting and made baby blankets and Afghans for each of her grandchildren. She also loved attending holiday bazaars, home shows, boat shows and RV shows and stops at the local casinos. She and Jean also spent time camping with family and friends. She loved traveling, taking trips to Alaska, Hawaii and especially, trips to Las Vegas.
Pam is survived by her husband Jean at the family home, son Paul Phiefer and wife Jennifer of Seattle and daughter Laura Dixon and husband Steve of Oak Harbor, one sister Deborah Delahunt of Simi Valley, Calif., and one brother Bill Kozma of Reseda, Calif. Six grandchildren: Matthew Dixon, Joseph Dixon, Andrew Dixon, Lucas Phiefer, Sarah Dixon and Burke Phiefer also survive.
