Percy Porter

Percy E. Porter, 86, died August 6, 2005 in Oak Harbor. He was born May 3, 1919 in Dalhart, Texas to Sherman E. and Marietta (Legg) Porter.

Percy was raised in Dalhart, but in 1935, moved to Oak Harbor with his family. He attended school and played on the Wildcat Basketball team. He was a member of the graduating class of 1937. After high school, Percy ventured north to Alaska, working on a riverboat in the Yukon. He returned to the Northwest and began work as a riveter for the Boeing Aircraft Company.

World War II began and Percy answered his call to service. He served with the U.S. Army and was stationed in England. Following the war, he returned to Seattle and attended business school, receiving his accounting certificate. He was married to Elizabeth Admiral in Seattle on April 9, 1946. He then went to work for McPherson Furnace Company.

In 1954, Percy returned to Oak Harbor with his family. He opened Porter’s Booking Service above Chuck Dann’s Sporting Goods store on Pioneer Way and then moving his office to his home on Scenic Heights Road.

Percy was one of the original ten charter members of the Whidbey Golf and Country Club. He was also one of the founding members of the Cornet Bay Marina. He was a member of the Oak Harbor Elks Lodge No. 2362, the Oak Harbor Toastmasters club and past president of the Washington Association of Accountants.

Percy enjoyed family activities, including golf and traveling, camping and photography and especially being out-of-doors. He is best remembered as a great husband and father.

Percy is survived by his wife Elizabeth at the family home Oak Harbor, by one daughter Penny Baldwin and husband Scott of Gig Harbor, one son Gregg Porter of Everett and two grandsons Brett and Cody Porter of Everett. Four sisters, Martha DeVries and Marge Admiral and husband Art of Oak Harbor, Betty Jo Viaene and husband Babe of Renton and Thelma McMinn of Texas also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, by one brother Marvin Porter and by one daughter-in-law Robin Porter.

Graveside funeral services for Percy Porter will be held on Saturday, August 13, at 2 p.m. at Maple Leaf Cemetery with Pastor Larry Rector officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to glaucoma research. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.
